1. The universal symbol
Every legal NJ package shows the state’s universal symbol, which tells you the product contains THC. On multi-serving edibles, each individual serving is marked with it too. If a product doesn’t carry the symbol, it didn’t come from New Jersey’s licensed market.
2. THC, CBD and CBG
The label lists total THC, total CBD and total CBG. “Total THC” counts the THC that’s already active plus THCA, a form that turns into THC when heated (THCA × 0.877 + delta-9-THC). That’s the number to compare between products.
3. Milligrams or percent?
- Flower, pre-rolls, vapes and concentrates are usually compared by THC percentage by weight.
- Edibles show THC in milligrams, per serving and per package. In New Jersey, a single serving can’t be more than 10 mg of THC, and a package can’t hold more than 100 mg.
4. Servings
Labels state the serving size and how many servings are in the package, for example: “The serving size of active THC in this product is X mg. This product contains X servings.” If you see INCLUDES MULTIPLE SERVINGS, the package is meant to be used over more than one session.
5. Chemotype, strain and terpenes
Flower labels show a chemotype, such as “High THC, Low CBD,” “Moderate THC, Moderate CBD” or “Low THC, High CBD.” You’ll also see the strain name and a terpene profile, which hints at aroma and flavor. More on strains and terpenes.
6. Dates, batch and lab results
- Harvest or production date and an expiration date.
- A batch or lot number and barcode that trace the product back to where it was grown or made.
- A summary of the lab test results, including cannabinoid potency and major terpenes.
- Who made it: the cultivator or manufacturer’s name and license number.
7. Ingredients and storage
Labels list other ingredients, possible allergens, and whether the product needs refrigeration. Flower labels also note the growth method (for example indoor, outdoor or hydroponic).
8. Required warnings
Every finished product carries these state-required warnings:
